They had no clue they might win! Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman scoop Emmys for Sherlock...but don't even turn up Read more:

They were the rank outsiders in their Emmy categories.

But in a surprise choice Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were both honoured for their roles as Sherlock Holmes and his long suffering side-kick Dr. Watson at the Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on Monday in Los Angeles.

Embarrassingly neither actor turned up to the glittering ceremony - maybe because they thought they didn't have a chance of winning their tough categories.

Benedict, 38, won for Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie while Martin, 42, took the honours for Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie for Sherlock: His Last Vow.

Fortunately show co-creator and writer Steven Moffat was on hand to accept his award for Outstanding Writing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A dramatic Special for Sherlock: His Last Vow, the third season of the revamped classic detective series, based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novels.

He beat Larry Kramer's script for HBO's much lauded HIV-AIDS bio The Normal Heart plus Treme, Luther, Fargo and American Horror Story: Coven

Among Lead Actor nominees, Mark Ruffalo as an activist in The Normal Heart was widely tipped to win.

Others in the category were Chiwetel Ejiofor for Dancing On The Edge, Idris Elba for Luther and Billy Bob Thornton for Fargo along with Martin, who was also nominated for Fargo.

In the Supporting Actor section Martin was also up against juggernaut, The Normal Heart, with nods for co-stars Jim Parson, Joe Mantello, Alfred Molina and Matt Bomer.

He also beat his Fargo co-star Colin Hanks.

The other reason why both actors were missing from the glittering event is their busy filming schedules.

Benedict and Martin are filming The Hobbit franchise of films, in which Martin stars as Bilbo Baggins and Benedict plays Smaug the Necromancer.

The pair are expected to come together to film the fourth season of Sherlock early next year.  But, before then, there will be a Christmas Special.
